If we don’t look after our teeth, bacteria and bugs can grow all over them and cause havoc. Bacteria can cause tooth decay. This is when your teeth get holes in them and they can become painful.
So caring for your teeth and keeping them clean is so important.
The best way to do this is by brushing your teeth. You’re going to need a toothbrush and some toothpaste.
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day; before you go to bed and in the morning. The brush before you go to bed is the most important. If you don’t get your teeth clean before you go to sleep then bacteria are left on your teeth all night. They won’t go to sleep! They will party and cause lots of damage to your teeth. So get your teeth clean before you go to bed to make sure that your teeth are safe while you sleep.
You need to brush your teeth for at least two minutes. Two minutes is a long time so ask your parents if they can put a clock or timer in the bathroom so you know how long to brush for.
You need to brush every tooth and every part of each tooth. Most bacteria will trap next to the gum and between the teeth so make sure you get your toothbrush partly onto the gum as well as the tooth.
When brushing you should use a small amount of toothpaste. The most important ingredient in toothpaste is fluoride. Fluoride adds itself to your teeth to strengthen them and keep them healthy. When you have finished brushing you must spit out the toothpaste but do not rinse with water. Just spit out the toothpaste. This leaves a bit of toothpaste on your teeth so the toothpaste keeps protecting them.
Tooth decay is not much fun but now you know how to prevent it. Teach your parents what you have learnt so that you can all keep your teeth safe.
